This species is of frequent occurrence throughout thenorth of Europe, Asia, and America; it extends rarelyfurther north than the middle of Norway, and the southof Greenland ; it is frequent on the southern coast ofIceland, but not so on the northern; the Faroe andOrkades are regularly visited by this bird. In Americait extends from Greenland to the middle of the S3 P- GANNET. 67 On the approach of winter the Gannet migrates south-ward ; on departing from our shores they first go tothe Channel in pursuit of herrings and pilchards thathabitually leave the shallow water of the coast for deepwater at that time of the year, and proceed further tothe Bay of Biscay, to the coasts of Portugal, Spain, andthe Mediterranean, and extend even to the southern coastof Africa, where they pass the winter, as well as in theintermediate parts. The open sea is the proper localityfor the Gannet; it comes nearer to the shores of thedifferent countries enumerated only in pursuit of its food,or during the breeding season; and when it is driven in-land by a continuance of very stormy weather, or someunforeseen circumstances, the straggling bird is entirely outof its element, flies on and on until it drops exhaustedto the ground, and may either be picked up or knockeddown with a stick, without its making any
