Le Punch Grassot
Known as the father of the modern poster, Jules Chéret (1836 – 1932) was a French painter and lithographer. He worked on everything from theater to advertising. A classic Cheret image with a charming young woman virtually floating out of the poster with her ready tray of aperitifs to promote the product. Coquettishly her back is turned to the viewer. Despite the brilliance of the lithography, the scene itself is unrealistic, as the girl appears not to be holding the tray, and uncharacteristically for Cheret, her legs are out of proportion to her body. But the overall effect is so charming and marvelous that these details can be easily overlooked.
