His early privileges werequite limited, but in later years he has madethe most of his opportunities and in the schoolof experience has learned many valuable les-sons, while through his earnest labor and per-severance he has won a comfortable compe-tence. His training at farm labor was notmeager and he early became familiar with thebest methods of caring for the fields and culti-vating the crops. In November, 1865, he sought and won acompanion and helpmate for lifes joumev. be-ing united in marriage to Catherine T. took his bride to the home farm and was. w. w. At length, however, he soldout there and in the spring of 1882 came , where he has since made his home. Helocated in Oskaloosa and worked at the car-l)enters trade until January, 1890. In thatyear he accepted a position in the courthouse,being under Charles V. HofTniann, who wasthen county treasurer. He filled a clerical po-sition in the office until 1893. He afterwardser\ed for four )-ears under ^Mitchell \\ilson,filling the position from 1894 until 1898. In1899 he was elected to the off
