It is well known, fromactual experiment, that ananimal may be fed to suchan extent on fatty foods,that the hairs on the bodyare actually infiltrated withoil, and yet, in a wellknown period of time, theanimal is sure to die. Theresult with a saccharinediet is exactly similar ;while with a starch diet,though the fatal result issomewhat longer post-poned, it is none the lesssure to occur. A promi-nent and well known phy-sician, in this city, who un-dertook to ascertain howlong he could maintain life,without serious suffering,on a diet of gum andstarch, has, though thisdiet was soon abandoned,never recovered from theeffects of his rash experiment. While twenty-five years have elapsed since the endurance of his self-imposed ordeal, his heart to-day beats thirty per cent, faster thanit did previous to his experiment. No facts in science then are better establishedthan those in regard to the comparative and relative values
