The firstrequirement is general hsemostasis, which is attained by anEsmarch (or other) tourniquet, sometimes supplemented by theuse of Wyeths transfixing needles. The dissecting set beingthe basis of the selection for work upon the soft tissues, the arteryclamps are increased to eighteen in number and augmented bytwelve medium-size curved clamps. To this set, add one ormore large amputating knives. Hypodermic syringes and cocainesolution should be prepared for blocking off large nerve trunksbefore severing. For the bone work, saws (a Gigli wire saw andone of the butcher type); bone-cutting forceps; rongeur forceps;and lion-jawed holding forceps will be required. The needlesand suture materials will depend upon the preference of theoperator. In general, heavy silk is used for tying large vessels;catgut on full-curved cutting needles of moderate size for muscularand other subcutaneous sewing; and interrup
