Handbill for Steven Berkoff’s adaptation of Franz Kafka’s ‘Metamorphosis’, The National Theatre, London, 1979

Handbill for Steven Berkoff’s adaptation of Franz Kafka’s ‘Metamorphosis’. Berkoff first staged this at The Roundhouse in 1969. The National Theatre production directed by Berkoff and with himself in the main role of Gregor was put on in 1979 by his company, The London Theatre Group. The original, ‘The Metamorphosis’ is a novella by Franz Kafka, first published in 1915. A travelling salesman, Gregor Samsa, wakes transformed (metamorphosed) into a large, insect-like creature. The cause of Gregor's condition is not revealed. He attempts to adjust to his new state as those around him become repulsed by the horrible creature in their midst – nineteen seventies graphics for editorial use only.
