Sorgum harvest being dried in the sun in a village compound with grain bins and a young boy. Karamoja Uganda Africa

These photographs were taken with the help of The Lutheran World Trust in Karamojo. They show traditional tribal villages with absolutely no modernisation. In the background are the thatched storage bins on stilts to stop rats eating the food. The Karamajong are an isolated tribe and at the time of photographing in 1989 ruled their own territory with no outside intervention. There were still raiding parties made by young heavily armed warriors, and one night a man was shot by a raid in the compound next to where we were staying. These photos show a way of life that has not changed for probably thousands of years and may still be the same today.
