The other portions of thecornice are debased Gothic, very rudely carved. In the centreon the south side is a boss with the figure of a woman playingon the In other bosses are oak-leaves in a circle, with acorns at thefour corners; three lilies, emblematical of the Annunciation,or three poppies, emblematical of Death ; at the west end arethe figures of men holding scrolls : all of these appear to beof later date than the main part of the tomb—as late indeedas the time of Elizabeth, apparently confirming the traditionthat the tomb of her relative was repaired by the order of thequeen after one of her Sussex journeys. These monuments are strong illustrations of the truth ofquaint Sir Thomas Brownes words, that Gravestones telltruth scarce 40 years; generations pass whilst some treesstand; and old families last not three oaks. The Braoseand the Hoo are gone, and, in the words of our last andgreatest Sussex poet,— Oblivion will steal silentlyThe remnant of their fame. viii. 17 130 FAMILY OF HOO. ° 3 I Ih- 03 ~ <o 9^ M -2 ° § g gjsi fl *» © H S3 H ° § § (5 to03 QO § Ih H Is* P^ o °i3 a. a? g lisMl ^3 © ° M 1-5 do §3 . 2 S
