Though it is not contended that an atmosphere containing onlycarbonic acid will support life, on the other hand, it has been foundby careful experiments made by well-known scientists, that men canbreathe fairly comfortably in air containing as much as 15 per carbonic acid, in which atmosphere one of the investigators remainedfor three quarters of an hour. Now the entire charge in the machinesusually fitted on board ship by Messrs J. & E, Hall Limited is suchthat the atmosphere would not contain so large a proportion of Refrigeration 549 I carbonic acid even if the whole charge escaped instantaneously fromthe machine into the main engine-room. The details of the machines arc as follows :— Description of Hall Plant. Compressor.—The compressors for tlie large machines are boredout of solid steel forgings, partly to secure strength, but principally on (CondenserCo/1 Brine return Condenser Guaye. Compressors of smaller are cast in a special bronze, which secures the two essentials of soundness and hardness. Thesuction and delivery valves are identical for facilities of interchange. Gland.—The gland is made gas-tight by means of two cuppedleathers on the compressor rod. A special lubr
