San Francisco earthquake. Historical image showing damage caused to San Francisco in California, USA, after the earthquake of 18 April 1906. Two women and a man wearing Victorian clothes walk among the ruins whilst smoke from fires hangs as a pall in the background. The city lies on the San Andreas fault, one of the world's greatest seismic fault lines. The earthquake of 1906 caused major structural damage and caused a series of fires which burnt for three days, destroying the city centre and much of the surrounding residential areas. Over 500 people were killed and 3000 acres were devastated, with the resulting fires doing even greater damage.
