CONDENSERS The condensing plant consists of four jet condensers, onefor each unit, with vertical twin pumps drawing from one anddischarging into a second of two concrete conduits, extendinglengthwise of the building under the basement floor. Thepumps, which are of the Blake pattern, are 16 ins. x 40 ins. x to the flange of the exhaust riser. There are three sets of thesebraces for each pipe. Salt water from the Providence River is used for is admitted into a flume, 7^ ft. wide and 8 ft. high, lined with6-in. sheet piling and having a floor of 4 ft. of concrete. Thebottom of the suction flume is 16^2 ft. below mean high water, and leads to a screen chamber, beyond which the flume takesthe form of a flattened ellipsoidal concrete conduit with axes73^ ft. and 4 ft. The discharge conduit within the building issimilar to the suction passage, except that it is 7 ft. i .p^w^1 CROSS SECTION OF POWER STATION 24 ins. in size for the horizontal engines, and 16 ins. x 48 ins. x24 ins. for the vertical unit. Relief valves are furnished neareach condenser unit, and the exhaust piping is of cast-iron,except beyond the relief valves, where it is of spiral rivetedpipe. There are two 36-in. free exhaust risers, one at each endof the building, the run of pipes being shown in the plan. Thetwo straight horizontal lines leading to the risers are each pro-vided with a Wainwright corrugated copper expansion risers, which are capped with exhaust heads, are some100 ft. high, and the braces used allow for expansion. Therods have a fork at each end, making a hinge joint, one at abracket fixed to the building wall and the other to a plate bolted Outside the building it is also of the timber wall and concretefloor construction, with its bottom 7 ft. below mean high water,or about 2 ft. below low water, and it is 4 ft. x ft. i
