Some stalks in every field fail to bear very dry or in excessively wet seasons, or when the cornhas not been properly cultivated, or when it has been grownon very poor soil, the number of barren stalks will be muchlarger than when all the conditions are favorable for the stand is too dense, — that is, with too many plantsto the hill, — the number of barren stalks will be larger thanwhen the stand is just right. First of all, it should be a varietyor type suited to your soil and climate.
