Dhobi wallah The ghats were built by the British 130 years ago adjacent to Mahalaxmi local train station where every day from dawn till dusk some 5000 dhobi wallahs pound the city s laundry from hospital sheets to up market hotels Row upon row of open air concrete wash pens each fitted with its own flogging stone Clothes are first flogged then tossed into vats of boiling starch and then finally hung out to dry they are washed in any one of 7 types of chemical baths according to fabric type Heavy wood burning irons are used for pressing Families and their kids also live on site in cramped and basic accomadation Workers receive 80 rps day 1 00 food one break 13 00 14 00 come maily from Uttar Pradesh and Kerala
