Earth's magnetic field. Supercomputer model of the Earth's magnetotail, the trailing deformation of the magnetosphere due to the action of the solar wind. The yellow lines show the paths of charged particles in the solar wind. The silver lines are the field lines of the Earth's magnetic field, which emanate from the Earth's poles. Earth has been removed, but would be at centre, at the origin of the field lines. The colours represent particle density, from red (highest) to blue (lowest). On the sunward side (facing towards top right), particles are densest as they slam into the magnetic field from the Sun. Behind the Earth, the density is lowest (bottom left).
