To do this, they ha\e helped to develop a variety of comprehensive new training pro-grams. This ongoing training helps to keep BIS personnel up-to-date on the use of thelatest technologies and investigative innovations, from DNA testing to fingerprintexamination and courtroom testimony procedures. At the same time, more tradi-tional investigative methods are still proving to be extremely effec-tive. Often it is BISs persistence in gathering, sharing andusing detailed and timely information about suspectsthat results in their ability to track down andeliminate drug, gang and other typesof organized criminal Interaction with the community they serve is also an essential part of BISs investigative activities,especially among the personnel in the Sexual Assault Unit. Because of the sensitive nature of theirwork, they are housed in a non-police facility and spend much of their time interacting with medicalstaff and other community and law enforcement partners. This is particularly true of programs likeSTOP Violence Against Women and the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner, or SANE program, whichrely heavily on the Units strong relationships with the Suffolk County DAs Office, the Departmentof Public Health, the BPD Domestic Violence Unit and many others. The results of working together in this type of flexible, highly-trained, team environment are example, in 1999, BIS personnel were able to: • Use Crime Stoppers tips to solve 15 cases, including 5 homicides; • Process nearly 30,000 records checks for over 24,000 ar
