It is proposed toemphasize this fact by carrying out thisfeature in the Exposition buildings. Charleston belongs to the best type ofthe old colonial cities of the United in IGTO, it was moved to its presentsite in 1672, and lies on the narrow neck ofland between the Ashley and Cooper Rivers,very much as New York lies between the 8 SOUTH CAROLINA INTERSTATE AND WEST INDIAN IALACE OK AGKILULTlKE. East and North Rivers. It contains somefine specimens of old colonial architectureand is a city of sunshine and roses, beingfamous for its bright and genial winterclimate and for its rose gardens. It is acity of safe, conservative business methods;its prosperity is real and substantial, butits inhabitants, while eminently social, andhospitable in temperament, are not givento display. Some of its institutions andcustoms are survivals from an old-worldpast, and full of interest and charm to thelover of the olden time. On the Ashley and the Cooper are theold baronial estates of the wealthy riceplanters and slave owners who once con-stituted the aristocratic class of SouthCarolina. Many of these fertile old plantations havebeen abandoned because of the new condi-tions, but many are still occupied by fami-lies that have owned them for two centuries,and within these homes, if one can gain ad-mission there, may be seen some wonderful antique
