[Vol. XXXV. No. 3. in.; rigid wheelbase, 7 ft. 4 in. With its four 125-hp motorsconnected to 36-in. wheels through a gear reduction of 66 to 17,this locomotive is capable of developing a continuous drawbarpull of 4500 lb. at 20 on level track. The full-load draw-bar pull is 9000 lb. at 17 on the level. The maximumstarting drawbar pull is 17,000 lb. The capacity of each substation was designed to take careof the electric locomotive fully loaded, or one train of twomotor cars and one trailer. In general service only single-motor cars are operated, without trailers; but when crowds. Visalia Single-Phase Railway—Frequency Changer andExciter are to be handled or the traffic conditions warrant, three-cartrains are run. As an operating test, a six-car train has beensuccessfully operated over the entire system. The maximumregular operating speed is 45 , although a single-motorcar has developed 62 The fast cars of the system runfrom Visalia to Exeter in 23 minutes, and from Exeter toLemon Cove in 21 minutes, equivalent to a schedule speed of31 A recent incident provides evidence of the ample tractivepower of the locomotive. While doing some switching aroundthe yard at Exeter, in order to get hold of a certain car it wasnecessary for the electric locomotive to move a train of 40standard refrigerator cars standing in the way. Twenty-eightof these were loaded, making the total weight of the train 1044tons, which was handled and switched around the yards by theelectric locomotive without special effort.
