His grandmothers names before marriagewere Rosalinda Holmes and Emeline Dean. His ancestors were of pure Pilgrim stock. William Bassettemigrated from England to Leyden, Holland; and came thence inthe ship Fortune to Plymouth, Massachusetts, in 1621. Hewas afterwards one of the original proprietors of Bridgewater,Massachusetts, — a man of good education, and a wealthy land-owner.
