Thefe are the only punilli-ments of which they have any knov/Iedge, and are found to be fufKcient to regu-late their moral conduft. In all California there are only two garrifons, each con-fifting of thirty men, and a foldier with each miflionary or magiftrate. Thefetroops were chofen by the legiflators, and are under their command, though paidby the government.
