. The elements of pathological histology with special reference to practical methods . ce of the process in the existence of the so-called trachoma-granules. Micro-organisms, and of various kinds, have already beenfound repeatedly in trachoma, but whether they have a causal 416 THE EVE import or not is absolutely uncertain. The process first attacks thepalpebral conjunctiva, afterwards also the tarsus, bulbar conjunctiva, and cornea. Histologically we find not only a diffuse small-celledinfiltration of the conjunctiva and subconjunctival tissue, but inaddition to this, especially in the conjunctival fornices, sharply cir-cumscribed small-celled growths resembling follicles—the so-calledtradioma-gramdes. With regard to these, of course, it must notbe forgotten that follicle-like structures may sometimes be presentnormally in the lower fornix. The epithelium is next thickened, and sometimes forms very deep depressions, betw^een which thepapillae, enlarged and infiltrated with cells, jut forward more or lessprominently. Should the epithelial depressions become closed Fig. 213.—Dipfitheritic Keratitis (in diphtheria of the naso-pharynx). x 265.(Weigerts modification of Grams method.) «, Juice-canaliculi in the superficial parts ofthe cornea, filled with bacteria (diphtheria bacilli and cocci); h, Necrotic portion of thecornea; c, Posterior part of the cornea infiltrated with pus corpuscles, the nuclei of whichare partly broken down into granules. cysts are formed. The trachoma-granules may eventually changeinto connective tissue, and the conjunctiva in general graduallyassume a cicatricial character. If now the tarsus and the Meibomianglands also atrophy, the final result is a drawing inwards of thecilia, or even the formation of an entropion. The cornea participatesin the process by the development of a pannus, which graduallyadvances from the margin towards the centre. 8.
