John P. Jumper September 6, 2001 - September 2, 2005 Just five days before the 9/11 terrorist attacks against the United States, Gen. John P. Jumper became the Air Force's seventeenth Chief of Staff. Over the ensuing four years, he led the service during Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom, America's first battles in the Global War on Terrorism, and Operation Noble Eagle, defending the country=s skies. During his tenure, General Jumper pressed for the modernization of the fleet, including the FB22 Raptor and FB35 Joint Strike Fighter, and established the Air Operations Center as a full-blown weapon system to make it more efficient. He also oversaw difficult efforts to rebalance the force to Congressionally mandated levels. Over the course of his nearly four decades in uniform, General Jumper participated in wars throughout the globe. He served two tours of duty in Southeast Asia, the first as a CB7 pilot for the 459th Tactical Airlift Squadron at Phu Cat Air Base, South Vietnam, and later as an FB4 instructor pilot, weapons officer, and fast forward air controller for the 555th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Udorn Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand. From August 1994 through June 1995, General Jumper led all airmen as Commander of Central Command Air Forces in the midst of Operations Northern Watch and Southern Watch, enforcing United Nations= mandated no-fly zones in Iraq. Less than five years later, he commanded Air Forces in Europe and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization=s Allied Air Forces Central Region during NATO=s Operation Allied Force. The Air Forces in Europe provided much of the air forces for the 77-day air war that successfully halted Serbian ethnic cleansing in Kosovo. General Jumper=s service also included tours as Commander of Air Combat Command at Langley Air Force Base, Virginia, and the 430th Tactical Fighter Squadron and 57th Fighter Weapons Wing, both at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada.
