This average difference for a given region was then added to the measurements of contracted annuli. This procedure converted all annular widths to those of fully extended annuli. Comparing annular measure- ments for in vivo, fixed, and dried specimens showed that width decreased 16-20% during the drying process, comparable to the shrinkage observed by Hayat (1978).
