An airliner of New Zealand’s Mount Cook Airlines on the tarmac at Queenstown Airport in 1979 with the Southern Alps as a scenic backdrop. Mount Cook Airline was a regional airline, founded in 1920, based in Christchurch, New Zealand. It became a subsidiary of Air New Zealand, in 2019 the brand name was retired with all services flying under the Air New Zealand banner. This aircraft is named ‘Aorangi’, a Maori name – which can translate as ‘Light of Heaven’, ‘World in the Sky’, or ‘Cloud of Heaven’. The Hawker Siddeley HS 748, a medium-sized turboprop airliner originally designed and initially produced by the British aircraft manufacturer Avro, was one of 8 aircraft that the airline operated. On the tail is an image of the Mount Cook lily (Ranunculus lyallii), the largest buttercup in the world. This image is from an old amateur Kodak colour transparency. It will look soft if used at too large a size – a vintage 1970s photograph.
