Petrified tree fern. Polished section of a fossil of the trunk of the tree fern Tubicaulis africanus. This was a common plant of the Palaeophytic, the period when the Earth's flora was dominated by seedless plants. This specimen is approximately 14 centimetres across. It was found in Tanganyika (now Tanzania), and dates from the Permian. It is part of the collections held at the Natural History Museum, London, UK.
