Brain tissue prion research. Veterinary medical officers examining prion distribution in brain tissue of affected animals where the disease-causing prions have accumulated. Transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) are caused by abnormal prions, which are virus-like proteins. The prions cause fatal brain and nerve degeneration in cows, humans and other animals. This research is being carried out by the Agricultural Research Service of the US Department of Agriculture.
