N the 19th of May, just before daylight, GeneralLopez landed his forces at Cardenas, a small townin the northeastern portion of the island. A com-bat ensues between the invaders and the garrison^and results in the defeat of the latter. The Gov-ernor is taken prisoner, the palace plundered, andthe public money seized. But this triumph is of short dura-tion. About daylight, a body of Spanish troops appear, march-ing upon the town, when the invaders demand to be recon-ducted to their vessels, in which they make the best of theirway towards the coast of the United States, reaching Key West justin time to escape a Spanish war-steamer sent to pursue them.
