King Charles II of France and the Holy Roman Empire (823-877), 9th century (1849). Charles II was Holy Roman Emperor (875-877) and King of West Francia (840-877). A 19th century version based on a 9th century miniature in the bible of Charles le Chauve, found in the collection of the Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris. From Le Moyen Age et la Renaissance, by Paul Lacroix, Ferdinand Séré and A Rivaud, volume V (Paris, 1849).
