In 1796 the General Assembly of Maryland incorporated Baltimore Town into a cityby the name of the City of Baltimore and the inhabitants thereof constituted as a bodypolitic and corporate by the name of The Mayor and City Council of Calhoun was elected the first Mayor. The City contained then about 20,000people, 3,500 houses and about 200 warehouses. The export and import into Ballimo-ePort amounted in 1798 to $12,000,000.
