A New Shot Victor Neesen, Late House Surgeon at the Womans Hospital in the State of New York: Assistant to theChair of Gynecology at the Long Island College Hospital. To a great many of the so-called modern gynaecologists whohave discarded many of the methods of the old masters, this instru-ment will not appeal. But to those who still follow Dr. ThomasAddis Emmets method of repairing the posterior vaginal wall, itmay prove of interest and of service. During the period in which the writer assisted Dr. Emmet inhis operations at the Womans Hospital, it occurred to him that ifthe little perforated shot, which are put on the free ends of the silverwire after the completion of the operation, could be adjusted and. squeezed with one instrument instead of two, as theretofore hadbeen the custom, it would save time and patience. After much difficulty, which at one time appeared like impossi-bility, the instrument to be described was evolved. In thinking outthe instrument three things had to be accounted for: Holding theshot for its application on the wire, pinching it, and releasing three things are now accomplished by a squeeze of the hand. The head of the instrument is made narrow and each blade con-tains a shallow cup. On one of the blades a funnel is fastened, sothat the hole in it will come directly over the middle of the hollowcaused by the shallow cups when the blades are coapted. • In theend of the funnel, extending its entire length, is a slit, which isto release the wire after compression of the shot. The handle ofthe instrument swells out to fit in the grasp of the fingers and palm. 756 Xczv Instruments. The method of tighten
