An examination of either thetable or chart shows no indications of a definite relation betweenthe lead, iron or total impurities and the hardness. Both show thatincreased cadmium gives greater hardness. To test the closeness of this relationship, Chart 2 was drawn. Inthis, the percentage of cadmium forms the abscissas and the pressure theordinates. The maximum and minimum limits of compression are shown,and a curve can be drawn well within these limits; in fact, it is close to theaverage in all cases. It seems obvious that cadmium is practically thesole cause of hardness in commercial spelter. Lead alone has practicallyno effect. Iron up
