Noblemen, gentlemen, and their wives,or merchants, might have Bibles; but no ordinary woman, trades-man, apprentice, or husbandman, was allowed to retain any.* Everyperson might have the book published by the bishops, the psalter, andother rudiments of religion, in English. All churchmen, who preach-ed contrary to that book, for the first offence, were required to re-cant ; for the second, to abjure and carry a fagot; but, for the third,they were to be burnt. The laity, for the third offence, were to for-feit their goods and chattels, and to be liable to perpetual imprison-ment. The parties accused were not allowed witnesses for their pur-gation.
