Was inbattle of Cedar Mountain, Virginia, August 9, 1862,where he was severely wounded. Was brevetted a colonelin the regular army, and appointed a major-general ofvolunteers for this battle. When able for duty, was puton court of inquiry to investigate surrender of Harpers. Ferry. Then applied for orders for the field, and was sentto report to General McClellan, then with his army atWarrenton, Virginia, and was assigned to command FirstDivision First Army Corps. Received orders next day toreport to General Banks. Accompanied him to NewOrleans, and commanded district of Baton Rouge untiladvance upon Port Hudson. During siege commandedleft wing of army. After surrender of Port Hudson,went North on sick leave in Jul), 1863. Was made presi-dent of military commission in Washington, D. C. Whileon that duty was assigned temporarily to command ofthe Department of Washington and Twenty-second ArmyCorps in October, 1863. Remained in that commanduntil August, 1866. In September, 1866, appointed presi-dent of board to examine newly-appointed officers. Jan-uary, 1867, was assigned to command of Department ofthe Platte, and remained there until assigned to commandof Department of Texas in December
