Antique Japanese Gilt Urushi Lacquer Peach-Shaped Sewing Box. Edo Period


Rare Japanese gilt lacquered sewing box with nine removable internal compartments arranged in two layers. Each has its own unique design – upper compartments feature peaches with fans, citron fingers with butterflies and a squirrel among grape vines. Unique central section has a pin cushion on its lid. Three lower compartments feature scenes with buildings surrounded by rocky outcrops and trees. Exterior of the sewing box is decorated with similar motifs and its shape is based on peaches depicted on its lid.
