Mandelate racemase enzyme, molecular model. This bacterial enzyme is an example of a muconate lactonizing enzyme, and plays a key role in the metabolism of soil and aquatic bacteria. Such enzymes help catalyse reactions, in this case involving mandelic acid and muconic acid. This example is from a Sulfitobacter bacterium, one that specialises in sulphite oxidation.
