Nocardia bacterial culture. Close-up of a petri dish culture of Nocardia bacteria. One species (N. asteroides) of these Gram-positive bacteria causes nocardiosis, a rare pulmonary infection that affects people with weakened immune systems. Another type (N. madurae) causes mycetoma, also known as Madura foot, a tropical skin and bone infection. This culture was grown on a nutrient medium such as agar.
