Fremont was apparently bom to be an explorer. Dangers did notappall him ; difficulties did not discourage him ; wild Indians did notdaunt his splendid courage; hardships did not weaken his firm resolu-tion. He planted the Stars and Stripes on the highest peak of the RockyMountains. He was born at Savannah, Georgia, Januar}^ 31, 1813.
