After leaving the High School he workedfor two years as machinist in the railway shopsat Cincinnati, and then went to the MassachusettsInstitute of Technology, where he took a coursein mining engineering. He practiced his profes-sion during each vacation while at the Institute,working during different summers in coal andiron mines and as a railway engineer.
