A manual of modern surgery : an exposition of the accepted doctrines and approved operative procedures of the present time, for the use of students and practitioners . t thestrangulation symptoms occurring in the irreducible hernia of oldpeople are apt to be more chronic in their course. Treatment.—The palliative treatment of reducible hernia is theapplication of a compress of gauze or other material, to hold the in-testine within the abdomen untila properly fitting truss can beobtained from the instrumentmaker. A hernial truss con-sists of a pad held in place overthe hernial ring by a springaround the pelvis. The trussvaries in shape and size in ac-cordance with the seat and char-acter of the hernia. It shouldbe made to fit comfortably and to make only such pressure over the hernial opening as will retain thestructures which are liable to protrude. If the patient can be seen bythe instrument maker, a properly fitting truss is generally readily ob-tained. When, however, the patient lives at a distance from a largecity the surgeon should send the instrument maker the girth of thepelvis midway between the crest of the ilium and the great trochanter,.
