These names were given whenit was thought that the sexual parts of the flowerlessplants were very minute or even wanting. The word isnow falling into disfavor with botanists. Cryptogamsare of less horticultural interest than the floweringplants, although they include the Ferns, and some inter-esting smaller groups, asSelaginellas, Lycopods or ClubMosses. A small genusof subalpine Ferns of both hemispheres. Lvs. of twosorts, the sporophylls contracted and the sori coveredby the infolded margin of the segments, forming pod-like bodies. Besides our native species, a second one,(7. erispa, is found in Europe, and a third in the Hima-layas. Name often incorrectly written Cryptogramms. acrostichoides, R. Br. Rock-Brake. Height about8 in.: lvs. 4-6 in. long, on tufted stalks,tri-quadripinnatifid, with toothed or 1 ^.L-ni. nts,the sporophylls with longer stalks, loss . mul withpod-like segments. Canada to Colorado, California andnorthward. L
