Equestrian statue of Robert the Bruce at Bannockburn, Stirling, Scotland


Robert the Bruce statue by Pilkington Jackson, sited at Bannockburn, where, on 24th June 1314, the Scots won a decisive battle against the English during the First War of Scottish Independence. Bruce holds the axe with which he cleft the head of Henry de Bohun on the eve of battle. The head was modelled on measurements of Bruce's skull following the re-discovery of his skeletal remains in Dunfermline Abbey in bronze statue will be restored to its original finish in time for the 700th Anniversary in 2014, along with a new Visitors' Centre.
