Comet of 1680. Historical illustration of the Great Comet of 1680 (C/1680 V1), seen in the night sky in November and December 1680. This was one of the brightest comets of the 17th century, and had a spectacularly long tail. Discovered by Gottfried Kirch on 14 November 1680, it reached peak brightness on 29 December 1680. This artwork shows observations made from 16-20 December. It is from the title page (see image C023/0826) of 'Ohnvorgreifliche Gedanken uber den im Monath November und December Anno 1680 erschienenen Cometen' (1680) by German teacher Friedrich Lips (1638-1695). Lips was rector at a school in Rothenburg, Germany.
