The Americana; a universal reference library, comprising the arts and sciences, literature, history, biography, geography, commerce, etc., of the world. nation with blue,as their distinctive color; and, possibly in conse-quence of that circumstance, the Whig partyhaving been opposed throughout to all themeasures of government which led to the Amer-ican Revolution, was chosen as the nationaluniform of the Americans at the opening of theRevolutionary War. Buff Leather, a leather prepared by satu-rating the hides with some aluminous substance, and afterward with oil. Leather prepared inthis way is softer and more flexible than anyother kind, and on that account it is much usedfor soldiers cross-belts, gloves, and other mili-tary accoutrements. Its color is naturally lightyellow, but it is in some cases bleached beforebeing used. The buff leather used in formertimes to make the jerkins, worn under coats ofmail to deaden the pressure of the metal onthe body, and to prevent any contusion from ablow, was made from the hide of the urus, orwild bull of central Europe, the common nameof which was buffe, whence the name of theleather was TIIK HARHOR OF RIO.
