The famous statue of Sir Winston Churchill opposite Big Ben and the House of Commons in Westminster, London, has barriers around so as to make it more difficult for protesters to climb onto the statue or deface it which has happened before. The Police Crime, Sentencing and Courts Act 2022 and the Public Order Act 2023 include new offences of ‘criminal damage to memorials and statues’, however the new legislation does not make it a crime to climb onto memorials.
