Sie ist seit 1934 ein Museum und war als Kirche 916 Jahre lang das religioese und kulturelle Zentrum des Byzantinischen Reiches. 1453 wurde sie mit Minaretten ausgestattet. Der heutige Bau stammt aus dem Jahr 740, wiederaufgebaut nach einem Erdbeben. GT
