Palace Zofin - Slovansky Isle, Prague, Czech Republic

Žofín (Sophia Island) or Slovanský ostrov (Slavic Island) is an island on Vltava river in Prague. It is located near the right (east) bank of the river in the New Town, close to the National Theatre. It originated in the 17th century by gradual sedimentation. Its emergence was probably sped up by building of the New Town Mills (Šítkovská Water-tower now remains of them). After a flood in 1784 the banks of the island were reinforced with walls and the island was planted by trees. In 1836-1837 an old inn on the island was rebuilt and enlarged. In 1838 the island was named after Archduchess Sophia (Žofie in Czech), mother of Emperor Franz Joseph In 1848 a great Slavic Congress took place here. In 1884 Žofín was bought out by Prague city council and the main building was rebuilt after a project by Architect Jindřich Fialka. Until the construction of the Municipal House this building was the main culture centre of the Czech nation. It is the site of many important events till present day. In 1930, at the southern end of the island, a new art museum and restaurant called Mánes was built on the site of former mills, next to the Šítkovská Water-tower. This building bridged the branch of Vltava between the Žofín island and the New Town bank, thus creating a new foot-bridge to the island. In 1948 a new road-bridge was built to connect the central part of Žofín woth the bank.
