Spanish Colonial Church, re-built 1692, Pueblo abandoned by1800, Kiva coexisted with church.

The Spanish Colonial church was re-built by Spanish priests in 1692 re-colonizing northern New Mexico after having been driven back to Mexico by the Pueblo uprising. After the return, wiser Catholic priests allowed the Pueblo people to become Cristian's and keep their own artifacts and kivas. Note the restored kiva in the church yard. The church was abandoned in the early 1700's as the native population started to diminish from a peak of around 2,000. Many of the native Americans rejoined the Grand pueblos. By 1800 the site was abandoned. The site is now a National Monument.
