The Central Park Bethesda Terrace Arcade with the restored ceiling and walls on Sunday February 8 2009 Four young adults and teenagers were arrested for vandalizing the walls with spray paint creating between 50 000 and 100 000 worth of damge The 7 million preservation effort cleaned and replaced the Minton encaustic tiles that formed the ceiling of the arcade the only known examples of Minton tiles used in ceiling decoration The 15 876 tiles were handmade by Minton and Co a leading 19th century ceramic manufacturer in the UK The arcade designed by Frederick law Olmstead and Calvert Vaux in 1858 leads into Bethesda Terrace and the Central Park Lake Richard B Levine
