Hangings at Tyburn often included a procession of the condemned from Newgate Gaol in the City (at the end of the 18th century hangings were moved to Newgate). In 1571 the Tyburn Tree gallows was erected, consisting of a horizontal wooden triangle supported by three legs (a ‘three-legged mare’ or ‘three-legged stool’). Multiple criminals could be hanged at once. Observing the proceedings could also be from the stands (here left).
