HARTHAM PARK. A little beyond the ninety-seventh milestone, a road branches off to the right,which leads to Hartham Park, a seat ofLady James, conspicuously situated be-yond a valley, about half a mile from theBath road. This estate, a very ancient residence ofthe ancestors of Edward Goddard, now the property of Lady James, one ofhis co-heiresses, by whom great improve-ments are making. The house has beentotally altered, and now assumes the ap-pearance of a handsome modern structure. From the eminence on which this man-sion stands, the grounds in various decli-. LONDON TO BATH AND BRISTOL. 69 vities slope to a rich vale beautifully adorn-ed with wood, which in a noble sweep en-circles its southern front, expanding as itstretches northward. On the south, and to the east, the hillsare decorated with wood, and agreeablydiversified by farms and cottages. The grounds around the house are lay-ing out, and a new road judiciously de-signed, forming a pleasant approach to it,has been made through the park. An ele-gant green-house, and other additionalbuildings; with many other improvements,are in contemplation; and from the knownliberality and distinguished taste of theproprietor, we may presume that in a shorttime, Hartham Park will be converted intoa most desirable and elegant residence.
