There are several well-known factors which determine theproper length of all exposures: the plate speed, the size of thediaphragm opening, the character of the subject and the of these factors are well understood and easily adjustedmechanically, but the light which is the dominant one and uponwhich everything depends, is most complicated. We know, and may notice, that the intensity of light variesconstantly from hour to hour and from minute to minute; butit is impossible for the human eye to know its quality.
